Map O’ The Day #217 – What Are People Really Buying Online?

Today’s MOTD was spotted on a colleague, Christian Gammill’s twitter feed. Created by the retail analytics company Permuto, this graphic uses their collected data and data from the US census bureau to paint a picture of what people buy online as opposed to in stores.

Some of the categories that caught me by surprise were clothing, furniture and food and wine. I would like to see the return percentage of clothes bought in store and clothes bought online, i would assume it is a much higher rate for online purchases which would really even out the numbers.

Map O’ The Day #215 – Smart Grid

Today’s MOTD comes to us from US Infrastructure and is a depiction of the development of the smart grid. With the development of the smart grid business is changing for not only the electric companies, but the consumers themselves. While certain advances, like the smart meter, are meant to make electric use more efficient and cost effective some customers feel that the devices are just a way for these companies to charge higher rates. The following article, Preparing for Customers’ Smart Grid Pushback, written by my colleague Sheldon Reiffenstein for the Harvard Business Review, examines this issue.

Smart meters will let electricity customers monitor usage almost minute by minute, allowing them to adjust how much they consume and, theoretically at least, lower their utility bills. So why, after Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) installed a few thousand smart meters in the San Joaquin Valley in California, did customers in the summer of 2009 complain about bills soaring and at least one person sue? Map O’ The Day #212 – Google’s Acquisition Appetite

google-acquisitions2
Today’s MOTD brought to us by www.scores.org and www.byjess.net is a great infographic that shows the acquisitions that Google has made from February 2001 to August 2010. I really like the way the author uses the circles with different colors to represent the different markts and the outer ring to show size and then the breakdown of what the motivation for the aquisiton was in the three colums.

Map O’ The Day #207 – Joomla! 1.6

joomla-1-6-infographic-xyz11pngscaled500
This infographic from www.joomlablogger.net, is excellent and super informative. I really love the way that the graphic utilizes actual screenshots to not only tell you what the changes are in Joomla! 1.6 but also teach you what the menus look like and where they are in relation to the other menus.

Map O’ The Day #151 – Realtime Twitter Trend Map

trend

Today’s MOTD is an interactive Twitter trend map from, www.trendsmap.com.

Map O’ The Day #150 – Online Relationships

asdasd

Today’s MOTD comes to us from David J Carr’s wordpress blog. He cleaned up a graphic (Top) that was covered by Mike Arauz (Bottom) at his blog.

I think David’s rendition of the graphic adds a lot of high value content without overwhelming or confusing the reader. Sometimes when you try to make a simple chart more specialized, you tend to lose more in translation than you gain, but not with this example.

Analysis and improvement of graphic content and re-rendering visual elements to add value are two things that Maga strives to do in all of its endeavors.
